Rabbi Dr. Ismar Schorsch, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, has announced that the date of his retirement from what is arguably the Conservative Movement's top position will be June 30 of 2006. At that point, Schorsch will have served as JTS chancellor for twenty years.
Dr. Schorsch announced that he leaves the position "with more than a tinge of sadness, because throughout my tenure, I have found my work deeply fulfilling. But I decided long ago to step down while still in top form. The time, however, has come for me to return to the life of the mind. During the past twenty years, I have planted many seeds that deserve to be tended and harvested. My experiences as Chancellor have been expansive, provocative and richly fertilizing and I return to my study a wiser man."
The release doesn't seem to be online in the press area of the JTS website yet, but a copy of the chancellor's resignation letter was sent to a listserve of JTS donors.
That is sad.
